This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. So, Conservatives: are you still the arrogant and corrupt PC government? In other words: is it possible to wring money from a sponge? HAMISH TREGARTHEN (A big chunk already went to paying off debt.) So, what’re we gonna do about it? Where is that $13-billion surplus gonna be spent? On lawyers and doctors for the poor and disenfranchised? Tax giveaways for big corporations and the ultra-rich? Addictions treatment and support for those glassy-eyed humans I see committing “slow-motion suicide” on our sidewalks every day? A public train system connecting the economic powerhouses of Calgary, Banff, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray? Don’t get me wrong: if the NDP were in power, we all know that our windfall would go directly to middle-management bureaucrats in health, academia, and government (the kind of folks who draw a six-figure salary and never meet a patient, student, or constituent). The going rate for our oil is just under $100 per barrel, the Russian war in Ukraine has sent natural gas prices through the roof, and our provincial budget clearly shows us well into the black again. A lifetime ago in January 2020, Premier Jason Kenney quipped, in response to the $171 million owed to rural municipalities by oil and gas producers, that “you can’t wring money from a stone.” I hear you: times were tough then. Sometimes, though, the way this odd little mountain fastness is run perplexes me. WHERE’S THE DOUGH? I love my home, and I can never really get over how amazing Calgary, Calgarians, Alberta, and Albertans are. KATHY PELLAND (Many Albertans and his own party have rejected the premier’s leadership and really don’t want to hear his opinion on anything.) You are making yourself look very petty and small and that is not a good look for anyone. The fact that you were voted out of your position should be a clue for you that a large majority of Albertans don’t care about your opinions. You were voted out of your position, so please just keep your mouth shut and stop interfering. Kenney, please just do the job you have to do until the new leader is elected and then just leave as quickly and quietly as possible. And his support of Travis Toews could very well backfire on him and Mr. Trashing Danielle Smith at every opportunity is disgraceful. He should not be meddling in the current UCP leadership race. People are getting very tired of Jason Kenney, he’s been voted out and people are now (not so patiently) waiting for him to leave. 7) Thank you, Rick, for your witty comments.
